Northwest Arkansas Logistics companies
J.B. Hunt Transport Services, which is headquartered in Benton County, leads a growing cluster of transportation, distribution and logistics companies in Northwest Arkansas. One of the largest transportation logistics companies in North America, J.B. Hunt, was founded in the region more than 50 years ago and has helped establish the transportation sector, which currently employs more than 12, 000 people. The transportation and logistics sector is projected to grow by 24 percent through 2015.
Why Northwest Arkansas
Northwest Arkansas’ transportation resources have contributed to the success of this sector. Interstate 49 runs north/south through the region and connects with Interstate 40 – the Main Street of North America – to the south, providing easy access to cities such as Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville. U.S. 71, which is being transitioned into I-49, connects to Interstate 44, a major east-west highway that runs from St. Louis to Oklahoma City.
Northwest Arkansas is served by mainline rail carrier Kansas City Southern Railroad and has shortline connections to BNSF and Union Pacific. In addition, the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport offers passenger and cargo service to major destinations, including Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York, Newark and Orlando.
To ensure access to a highly skilled workforce in the transportation sector, the University of Arkansas Walton College of Business offers a bachelor’s degree in transportation and logistics in addition to master’s degrees in supply chain retail, information systems, accountancy, and economics; and seven doctoral programs. The Walton College of Business includes the Supply Chain Management Research Center and the Center for Business and Economic Research. NorthWest Arkansas Community College offers associate degrees and certificates in transportation and logistics management. The Shewmaker Center for Global Business Development at NWACC houses the Transportation and Logistics Institute, providing professional development opportunities for workers in the sector.
